Description

Rockaway Waterfront Alliance has an exciting part-time opening for a program coordinator with a diverse skill set to manage two pilot technology programs: First Wave is a new pilot, intergenerational program focused on building technology skills, social connectivity, and emergency preparedness in local seniors and immigrants through tech-consultations and workshops in partnership with local tech-savvy youth. First Wave seeks to engage emergency-vulnerable populations without technology or English-language proficiency to become knowledgeable users of email, smartphones, cellphones, and computers. Workshops may include 21st Century communication (e- mail, Skype, Google handouts), open- source technology platforms, and massive open online courses (MOOCs) as provided by MIT's MITX or Harvard's edX initiatives. Workshops and trainings will be led by First Wave high school- and college-age interns to build the leadership, job-readiness, and community engagement skills of local teens. With large number of immigrants and a robust and dense senior population, Eastern Rockaway is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in New York City. However, Many community members have trouble accessing basic resources due to language barriers, barriers to technology knowhow, and/or lack of economic resources. First Wave partners youth with immigrant and senior populations to provide basic technology training that are important to improve social connectivity of seniors and vital in accessing emergency evacuation and preparedness notifications. The program is built on the success of RWA's Shore Corps internship program and the momentum around the installation of Rockaway's first free public wifi network, RockSpot, and the opening of Rockaway Institute for a Sustainable Environment. Digital Stewards Program is a new program to train local youth to install and maintain a new public wifi network around the Rockaway Institute for a Sustainable Environment. This community infrastructure project will be installed around the community with local partners as a resilient local network aimed to prevent future loss in communication during emergencies or flooding. Digital Stewards is a training program with an aim to ensure that the local community has the skills and resources to repair or reconfigure the network. Upon completion of the training program this team of neighborhood "Digital Stewards" will be the first to respond in troubleshooting the network, provide support, and train others to take care of the RockSpot wifi network in the Eastern Rockaway community. The Digital Stewards will also manage and program a community splash page for the wifi network, " a community board," with announcements, videos, news, and events supporting the local community.
