Description

University Settlement is the recipient of Community Development Block Grant _ Disaster Recovery funding from the New York State Governors Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR) to implement disaster recovery services in the assigned Lower Manhattan NY Rising Community Centers. The purpose of the program is to provide local residents recovery information, support in recovery efforts, and the ability to receive recovery services in a centralized location in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. In fulfillment of the grant requirements, University Settlement is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Community Resource Specialist to work in the delivery of ÐResponse and Recovery Workshops.Ó University Settlement is a community-based multi-service agency providing a comprehensive network of services to over 30,000 people each year. Programs include mental health services; early childhood services; older adult programming; after-school and day camp programs; community centers; eviction prevention; social service support; arts programs; and adult literacy. When Super Storm Sandy hit our region, University Settlement played a key role in neighborhood response and recovery and has since been selected to serve as a Community Recovery Center. The Community Resource Specialist will help ensure that our neighborhood residents and program participants are aware of the recovery and resiliency resources available and have access to services, information and support necessary to successfully weather any future storm event or disaster.

Essential Functions

Assist neighborhood residents and program participants in accessing disaster and resiliency-related resources and services. Support outreach and education efforts for all University Settlement NY Rising-sponsored programs (ESOL classes, Response and Recovery Workshops, Older Adult Mental Health, Housing Counseling). Distribute community resiliency information and resources out of University Settlements Recovery Center at 184 Eldridge Street. Provide community and program participants with information and education about typical disaster reactions, helpful coping strategies, and available disaster related resources. Build relationships with community-based organizations within LES Ready as well as faith-based groups and other local agencies. Attend community forums and local events to share information and referrals. Complete other relevant tasks as required by supervisor.

Qualifications

High school and some college, or commensurate work experience, required; Bachelors preferred Strong intuitive skills about people; good judgment and common sense; relates well to others; good listener, capacity to demonstrate empathy Bi-lingual Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) or Spanish preferred Knowledgeable about the community to be served Good public speaker Demonstrates positive regard for others Communicates effectively Displays cultural competence
